At Dr SickleCell we always place a strong emphasis on preventative medicine. Sickle Cell Disease, like other chronic disease requires on-going quality care to in other to ensure improved quality of life.

The episodic pain experienced by patients with sickle cell anemia is the bane of the disease. This is why we place strong emphasis on preventative care. With adequate preventative care coupled with some of our wellness services, patients can experience zero recurrent pain episodes, increase overall health and well-being and improved quality of life.

Adherence to treatment, diet plans and timely checkups are recommended to prevent the occurrence of episodic pain and also assist in the early detection and prevention of common medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes etc.

Quarterly or Annual checkups after 20 years of age are recommended to assist in the early detection and prevention of common medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart and vascular disease, diabetes and cancers.

More frequent assessments are recommended for patients under 20 years of age but may be waivered in certain situations.

The Doctor can conduct a thorough history and examination.  This may include breast checks and pap smears for women and rectal prostate examination for men. The skin is also checked in addition to internal organ systems.

A fasting blood test is often included.  Cholesterol and blood glucose regularly checked. In some cases, faeces are tested for hidden (occult) bleeding as a screen for bowel cancer.

Sometimes X-rays & other tests such as a stress heart test are suggested.

Importantly all assessments will be followed by a management plan tailored to your individual needs. This will include review appointments if necessary.

Adequate time needs to be arranged for such an assessment so please inform the receptionist of this when booking.
